SUA is an urban farm in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. We work to collectively strengthen local food security and access through sustainable growing, buying, and selling practices.
Jamal: Founder and Lead Farmer.
Jamal Elhayek founded Supporting Urban Agriculture LLC. January of 2012. After organizing for a year in Central City around Food Justice and Access disparities in the neighborhood he saw the need to take his efforts from organizing to growing vegetables. "Growing vegetables in an urban environment is a form of advocacy in its own right." When people ask me how long have I been farming? I tell them"I moved to New Orleans 2007 not knowing how to grow a single thing, started organizing in 2011, now I'm running a small urban plot in the Lower 9th Ward, I'd say it found me."
Can you imagine a landscape with out prisons? Solitary Gardens is at the intersection of permaculture, prison abolition & public art. Using garden beds to illustrate the inhumanity of solitary confinement the Gardens expose the illusion that slavery has been abolished. Located around the corner: 2600 Andry Street. As a company we focus on the screams of triumph and struggle most ignored and isolated by mainstream fashion. These are the designs that color our Threads Of Truth.
